Can all kinds of varicose veins be treated?
Yes. Large veins, spider veins and facial capillaries can all be treated safely.
How many treatments will I need?
You will be given an estimate during the consultation the number of treatments differ depending on the extent of the damage.
How many injections will I be given during each visit?
The number of injections will vary. It is not the number of injections that determine the effectiveness of the treatment, but the type of sclerosing agent used, and the site of the injections.
Does the treatment involve any risk?
All medical treatments entail a certain degrees of risk. This will be discussed during your first visit. Fortunately when sclerotherapy is administered by physicians with appropriate training and experience serious complications rarely arise.
What about hospitalization?
None is required. The treatments are simple, they can be performed in the doctor's office, and usually take about 15 minutes.
Will I need to wear leg bandages after treatments?
As a rule, no. But in special cases, yes. Often, small cotton balls will be taped to leg at the site of the injection. These cotton balls can be removed about 2 hours after the treatment.
Should I wear support hose after treatment?
We suggest them for anyone suffering from venous congestion. They should definitely be worn whenever you have to stand for long periods of time.
Is the treatment painful?
Some discomfort may occur, but it is usually minimal.
Once treated, can these veins come back?
No. The treated veins disappear permanently. However other varicose veins could develop.
Will I have to rest in bed after each treatment?
No. In most cases you will be able to return to your normal activities right after you leave the clinic.
What about exercise after the treatment?
For most cases you may walk, swim or cycle as much as you please.
How much will my treatment program cost?
Each case is different. The cost will be discussed during your first consultation. The initial consultation is covered by OHIP.
Will the treatment covered by my insurance company?
Most insurance companies only reimburse policy-holders if the treatment is determined to be medically necessary. Unfortunately this is rarely the case.
Will I require follow-up visits?
We suggest you come in once or twice a year so we can check for any new varicose or spider veins.
How can I prevent new varicose and spider veins from developing after my treatments?
Exercise regularly. Wear comfortable shoes, preferably with 1 or 2 inch heel. Avoid wearing girdles. Wear ordinary knee-high stockings or socks.
